Artists are uniquely capable of translating the challenges, solutions, and complexities of the world into forms that everyone can understand. The importance of this skill has never been greater.
For our 2027 Arts Education in Action
exhibition, Schack Art Center is seeking artwork that explores, celebrates and examines the broad realm of food: culture, family, connection, creativity, recipes, ritual, aesthetics, agriculture, nutrition, nostalgia, evolution, insecurity, comfort, entertainment, art.

We seek 2D and 3D, painting, drawing, sculpture, furniture, printmaking, fiber, glass, photography, video and beyond. Installation proposals encouraged.

The objective of this exhibition is to explore the many ways food is central to our lives.

Food is basic to all life on earth.
For humans, food can be grounding, ritual, connection to others. It is central to our celebrations, our sorrows, our survival. It is medicine, comfort, love, and nostalgia. It can be nemesis, joy, entertainment, passion, and art.
Food commands a room in every home and a plethora of industries to supply and equip them. Restaurants, grocery stores, bakeries, cafes center on it. Food and agriculture industries represent 20% of the US economy*. Add in food-adjacent industries like appliances, cutlery and gadgets and that percentage soars.

Food = Cooking & Eating:
Favorite foods; common and unusual foods; snacks; kitchen fails and wins

Food = Science
Photosynthesis; hunger; taste/smell; nutrition; freshness; allergies

Food = Connection & Symbolism
Your traditions; recipes; cultures; daily connection; celebration; ritual and ceremony

Food = Art
Food styling; food advertising; making food appetizing; culinary arts

Food = Harvest
Growing food; P-patches; buying local; diverse cultural practices; agriculture; foraging

Food = Industry
Food-adjacent industries (dishwashers, etc.); cookbooks; food careers; FDA/USDA; additives

Food = Survival
Nutrition; vegan/vegetarian; preferences; food safety; edible vs inedible

Food = Power
Food insecurity, food deserts, food waste; gender roles; class divisions; food banks

This call is open to all artists living and working in the Pacific Northwest.Out of respect for those facing food insecurity, we discourage work made of food.Artists will be asked to provide a favorite recipe, to be included in a combined recipe booklet for visitors to take home or access online with QR code.Read entire Submission Guide below. All entries must be submitted at schack2027food.artcall.org  Upload one image for each piece entered with a maximum of six (6) pieces per artist. See tutorial video on submission page for detailed entry instructions.NOTE: Each piece you enter will be referred to as an "application". You may submit up to 3 "applications". Submission guide:
Artists (or an assistant) must be available for stated delivery and pickup dates and times. All submitted artwork must be for sale, available for the full duration of the exhibition, and not previously shown at Schack Art Center. Schack takes 40% commission on sales. Set your retail price with this in mind! Do not submit NFS work.All work must be delivered gallery ready. Any 2D work should be framed if appropriate & wired to hang quickly.Work must be original: designed and made by the artist (no kits, pre-designed patterns, commercially available molds, etc.) Exceptions for elements of collage and assemblage.We do not accept any work created, in whole or part, by AI.Send clear, quality images of the artwork, including frames for 2D, included stands, etc. for 3D.Jurors consider the quality of submission, ability to follow instructions/theme, and quality of work. Not all submitted work will be accepted. Some accepted work may not be included.

We receive hundreds of entries for our group shows and have limited space. Acceptance of work can hinge on factors such as number of submissions with same specific subject matter, numbers of oversized works, etc. We do not provide feedback on jury decisions.
If your work is not accepted this time please try for the next group call. Don’t get discouraged! It’s part of the process. You got this!
