Ohio Percent for Art/Lakeland Community College - Engineering Building RFQ
Open To: Ohio Artists Commission Amount: $73,000Entry Open Date: Friday, March 28, 2025Entry Deadline: Friday, May 23, 2025Project Summary: Lakeland Community College (LCC) is inviting Ohio artists to submit up to nine (9) digital images of past interior work and a resume/artist statement for their Engineering Building Project commission. From the submissions, a group of semi-finalists will be selected to meet with the committee and learn about the new engineering building and see artwork site locations to create a site-specific artwork proposal. LCC employees and their spouses are not eligible to apply for this commission. Students enrolled in any degree or certificate-granting program are not eligible to apply.Project Background and Building History: The renovation and expansion of the Engineering Technologies Building at Lakeland Community College will ensure that job training will meet employer needs in advanced manufacturing and applied engineering. The project will modernize most of the Engineering Building's existing space and provide capacity for Lakeland to implement new programming and fulfill demand that is currently unmet in the region. Market factors indicate that demand is high for educated, entry-level manufacturing employees.
Engineering Technologies Building - The project has local workforce support from the Lake Development Authority, Lake County Workforce Development Board, Geauga Growth Partnership, Alliance for Working Together (AWT), and many area manufacturing companies. Ohio's new Intel plant and suppliers also represent an enormous opportunity for Lakeland graduates.
The U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration (EDA) awarded a $4.2 million grant to Lakeland to renovate its Industrial Skills Training Center for Advanced Manufacturing, located on the east side of the building. The EDA investment will be matched with $3,1 million in local funds and is expected to create or retain over 900 jobs and contribute $5.2 million in private matching investment.
Lakeland's engineering advisory committees, faculty, lab instructors, and student representatives were involved in the design process. The project will expand labs, improve teaching facilities, resolve overcrowding, and safety issues, and provide student collaboration spaces.
Mission and Vision of College:
To provide quality learning opportunities to meet social and economic needs of the community and to be the best in creating learning opportunities.
Artistic Goals of the Commissioned Piece:
The location for the commissioned artwork is the interior lobby walls at both the east and west ends of the building, as well as the connecting corridor. The commissioned artwork should represent the skilled trades (either through imagery or fabrication process) that are taught in the building. A connection between the art and what happens in the building is desired.
Practical Considerations:
Artwork considered for the LCC Engineering project must be durable and suitably maintenance-free. Interior work can be applied directly to the wall or adhered to the wall.
