Lyn Laviana and James Alan Edwards at Paul's Homewood Café

Lyn Laviana Bio:
Lyn was born in Kansas City and grew up in the Northeast, painting since grade school. She went to college for computer science degrees leading to a corporate job. She spent two years working in Tokyo and went around the world twice before moving back to the United States. After retirement, Lyn actively pursued art taking numerous classes and workshops. Although she has painted in oils for many years, and enjoys the saturation of color with pastels, she is currently most interested in printmaking and acrylics. These media allow the transparency that pastels do not and the immediacy that oil paints do not. Lyn is a Signature Member of the Maryland Pastel Society (MPS) and a member of the Maryland Federation of Art (MFA). She participates in many local and national juried shows winning numerous awards.Lyn Laviana Artist Statement:I love screen printing because it combines preciseness with creativity. My subjects wander among abstracts, landscapes and houses. The starting point is often a photograph of the subject. Photographs of my abstract paintings are used to design a screen print that looks nothing like the painting. Screen prints are created one layer at a time. Each layer is one color or a gradient of colors. I like using transparent inks which results in more colors than were actually used to create the print where the colors overlap. I use an IPad to create the initial design. It allows for rapid design changes, color selections and the ability to define the layers. The resulting artwork is rarely exactly like the initial design. The shapes will be the same but something magical happens to color in the translation from design to ink. It seems to glow with transparency and color vibrations that are not always apparent in the original design. Using a more chaotic design approach, I use screen print proofs and mono prints as collage material for paintings. I like the printed paper to be transparent so the history of what has gone before is visible and it is not always clear which layer came first.

James Alan Edwards Bio:
James Alan Edwards is best known as a professor of art and an accomplished illustrator, but over the past decade he has shifted his attention to creating a body of unique fine art paintings in oil. Edwards has utilized the exacting methods of his former career as Boston-based designer to produce meticulously crafted and intensely personal representations of the visual world.
James Alan Edwards Artist Statement:
I aim to combine visual poetry with moments of realism to conjure a ‘presence of being’ – combining sense with sensation. I am looking to capture aspects of a universe in a state of constant flux, while expressing elements of authentic human emotion - broader and more layered in time than a single snapshot - rather; shifting, changing, evolving, and becoming. I aim to learn something new about my existence in the process of painting and something new at each viewing of the completed work.
