HSC Children's Hospital is Manitoba's only treatment, teaching, research and health promotion facility exclusively for infants, children and adolescents. About Graffiti Art Programming
Graffiti Art Programming (GAP) is a Community Youth Arts Centre featuring a contemporary art exhibition space and offering free art classes to children and youth throughout the North End and Downtown neighbourhoods. In our capacity as Project Manager, GAP is excited to partner with the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba to develop, coordinate and deliver an art installation project within the Cancer Ward at HSC Children’s Hospital.  

Project Overview

Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba is excited to invite interested artists to create artwork to be installed on the childhood cancer and blood disorders ward of Children's Hospital.

Project Mission

These artworks will provide comfort, inspiration, and hope for children and families during extended and difficult hospital stays, embodying our belief that together, we can "make anything possible."We ask artists to provide a digital design suitable for large-format vinyl printing. Horizontal orientation preferred. Once the committee has selected the finalists, their artwork will be professionally printed on durable hospital grade vinyl that will be applied directly on to the walls in each inpatient unit. 
Each space will be designed with diversity, equity, inclusivity and reconciliation at its heart, reflecting the diversity of children and families served with particular attention to the representation of Indigenous cultures and communities. This project aims to set the standard for creating spaces that uplift children facing the toughest journeys, create environments that support emotional well-being, and a sense of comfort through engaging, age-appropriate, and culturally sensitive works of art.
We encourage artists from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Indigenous, 2SLGBTQ+, BIPOC and disability communities.  

Project's Artistic Vision

We believe the most powerful healing art emerges when artistic imagination meets purposeful design. Artists bring the creative vision and individual creativity that drive this project, while certain foundational elements—from color palettes to cultural inclusivity—help us create a cohesive healing environment that serves the children who will live with it during their treatment journey.
Project Theme: "Let's Make Anything Possible" All artwork should radiate the spirit of "Let's Make Anything Possible" – creating a sense that no dream is too big, no goal unreachable, and every day holds potential for wonder and magic. Art should help children stay connected to their imagination, playfulness, and the joy of simply being a kid.
Project Scope
Through this Art Call, up to 20 artists will be selected to participate in this revitalizing, healing art project. The goal is to transform 15 inpatient rooms and adjacent spaces on the childhood cancer and blood disorders ward of Children's Hospital into vibrant, healing environments that spark comfort, joy and imagination. 
We envision uniquely designed, original digital artwork, that will then be printed on vinyl and installed in such a way as to wrap around 2-3 walls in each of these rooms (vinyl printing and installation will be the responsibility of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba). For the artist’s reference, we have provided 3D images of the 4 unique inpatient room designs and 1 adjacent space, and one image (courtesy of local artist Kal Barteski) of what a finished room, complete with artwork, would look like. We ask that in your submission you identify which of the 4 rooms your design has been created for (only one design per artist). 
Working within the guidelines and requirements of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, artists will have full creative control of their work.

Content Guidelines
Content to Avoid

To ensure artwork creates a healing environment appropriate for all children and families, please avoid the following:
✗ Medical imagery or hospital references
✗ Potentially frightening elements (storms, darkness, conflict, scary animals)
✗ Cartoon characters, mascots, or pop culture references (these date quickly and may not remain relevant)
✗ Branded logos or commercial references of any kind
✗ Tokenistic cultural references or stereotypical cultural imagery
✗ Seasonal designs (Christmas, Halloween, etc.) that limit year-round appropriateness
✗ Overly complex or chaotic compositions that might feel overwhelming
✗ Religious symbols that might exclude some families
✗ Any content that might trigger anxiety during illness
✗ Loud or jarring color schemes, overstimulating visuals

Visual Requirements
Colour Palette

When creating your design you may use your choice of ‘uplifting’ colours. And, in an effort to create a flowing, cohesive healing environment we ask that you also select and incorporate at least 3 colours from the provided colour palette. (Please see colour chart).

Technical Specifications

For medical care reasons please leave the ‘Head Wall’ behind the patient bed free of imagery.
Hospital walls may occasionally experience damage due to medical equipment, maintenance, or patient care activities. 
With your participation in this project, artists agree to authorize reprinting of their artwork if unexpected damage occurs within the first 10 years of installation. This agreement ensures that children's rooms can be quickly restored with healing artwork when needed, maintaining the therapeutic environment that supports their wellbeing.Family-Centered Approach and Long-Term Impact

Artist Compensation and Expected Timeline
Total Compensation: $3,000.00 per selected artist. 
Final proposals are due February 2, 2026
Selection Committee deliberations and decisions February 9-13, 2026
Selection Committee decisions communicated to all participating artists by February 20, 2026.
Selection Process
The commissioned artists will be selected through an open Artist Call.
Artists will submit their design incorporating; the “Let’s Make Anything Possible” theme; Content Guidelines; Visual Requirements; Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba Colour Palette and Technical Requirements.  
The committee will then select up to 20 artists to be included in the final project.

Selection Criteria
Expressions of interest will be reviewed on the basis of:
Age-appropriate, uplifting content suitable for extended viewing (25%) Qualifications and experience of the artist (25%)Alignment with "Let’s Make Anything Possible" theme and healing mission (20%)Proper incorporation of required CHFM color palette (15%)Technical quality and suitability for hospital environment (15%)Use of AI-Generated designs will not be accepted

Required Materials

Artwork Submission Guidelines – Children’s Hospital Room Graphics
Preferred File Types

Vector files (preferred when possible): 
AI, EPS, or PDF (outlined fonts)
Raster filesTIFF or PSD (layers welcome but not required)High-quality JPG or PNG may be accepted for review, but not for final productionResolution and Quality
Raster artwork should be created at 300 DPI at full scale where possible
For very large-format artwork, 150–300 DPI at final size is acceptable
Do not upscale low-resolution images, as this will affect print quality
Color Mode
Artwork should be supplied in CMYK color mode
RGB artwork is acceptable for initial review, but final files will be converted to CMYK for printing
Bleed and Cropping
Final print files will require bleed on all sides
Please plan for an additional 1–2 inches of bleed beyond the final visible area
Important visual elements should be kept away from edges to allow for trimming and installation tolerances
Raster vs. Vector Considerations
Vector artwork is ideal for scalability and sharpness across different room elements
Raster artwork is perfectly acceptable, provided it meets resolution requirements
Mixed files (vector + raster) are welcome
Content Considerations
Avoid small text, fine details, or elements that rely on exact positioning
Designs should be adaptable to multiple sizes and surfaces
Final Notes
Measurements and specific templates will be provided to selected artists before final production. Our production team will work with chosen artists to ensure artwork translates well to print and installation. Minor adjustments for scaling, bleed, or technical setup may be required before printing. Artist Recognition & Media Expectations
Selected artists will:
Have artwork permanently displayed in childhood cancer and blood disorders ward patient rooms at Manitoba's only children's hospitalBe recognized as community partners in children's healing and hopeReceive formal acknowledgment and documentation of community contributionSelected artists’ information including bios, artwork descriptions and images will be included in Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba's promotional materials and distributed to mediaArtists will be asked to make themselves available for media requests and interviews.
