Description
Project: Mural in Apex, North Carolina
Summary: The Town of Apex is inviting artists to apply to design and install a mural on a retaining wall along the White Oak Creek greenway in Apex, NC 27502.
This section of greenway is a part of the National East Coast Greenway and is heavily traveled on a daily basis as it ties to the American Tobacco Trail and provides connectivity between Durham City/County, Chatham County, Wake County, Town of Cary, and Town of Apex.
Mural Description / Theme: The mural shall be an original work of art specifically designed for the location and have a “nature” theme. This area of town is part of a study to develop a conservation management plan to protect and enhance our natural environment and water supply as White Oak Creek feeds Jordan Lake. The selected artist will design the image with input from a subset of the Public Art Committee and after approval from the Town of Apex will install/paint the mural. The Apex Public Art Committee reserves the right to request additional information from each individual artist.
The middle section of the wall is 105 feet long and 7.5 feet high at the tallest point with two walls in a wedge shape, one 30 feet long from 7.5 feet tall to ground level and the other 12 feet long from 5.5 feet tall to ground level. All of the wall sections shall be covered by the mural. The mural shall be permanently affixed to the surface and use materials suitable to withstand the elements for many years to come. All scaffolding, ladders, etc. will be the responsibility of the artist as well as supplies necessary to complete the project and clean-up of the site post installation.
Council Review: The Town Council will have final approval over works of art that will be located on public property including, but not limited to, parks, town buildings, and main entrances into Town. Town Council will also have final approval over works of art that receive or will receive public funding. Final approval of each permanent work of art shall occur after a public hearing at the Town Council meeting to enable community input
Budget: Submission must include the specific budget as part of the proposal.
Eligibility: Open to all professional artists creating original works of art, suitable to the exterior on a permanent concrete structure. Local, regional, and North Carolina based artists are specifically encouraged to apply.
Deadline for Application: Tuesday, September 10, 2024 ; 5:00pm EST.
Publicity: The artwork and artist may be featured on the Town website, in local media and at the Halle Cultural Arts center upon completion of the work. In general, the Town of Apex shall own the physical works of art, while copyrights shall be retained by the artist, with reproduction rights allowing the Town of Apex to use the artwork for appropriate promotional and educational purposes.
Selection: The artist selection committee may be comprised of members of the Apex Public Art Committee, Apex Town Council, Apex Town Staff and/or representatives of the community. The selection process will include a review of your submittal and may include an interview with the shortlisted artists. Selection criteria includes experience with public murals, experience working with municipalities, originality and artistic quality of reference works and commitment to meet timelines and budget. The Town of Apex reserves the right to refuse any or all submissions and to determine that submissions are not adequate for any reason.
