Description
Stone is the foundation, the engraved memory of parish churches and fortresses, sanctuaries and sacred caves. It is the sedimented history, the visible world, the carved sacred.
The serpent, symbol of the transformation of an obscure knowledge, is the paganism that snakes beneath evangelisation, it is the superstition that resists beneath official religion, it is the mystery that runs invisibly beneath the foundations of faith.
Under the churches, under the parish churches, under the walls of power, lurk forgotten stories, whispered voices, rituals that have never ceased to exist.
The valleys overlooking the Marecchia, with their changing landscape of rolling hills and rocky cliffs, have guarded tales of healers, witches, goblins and saints for centuries. Here the natural and the divine intertwine in an intangible heritage of rites, beliefs and symbols, handed down orally and resisting the transformations of modernity.
This call invites artists, creatives, designers and collectives to reinterpret the intangible heritage of the territory through contemporary languages, investigating the thin border between the sacred and the magical, between protection and danger, between what is written and what is whispered. The winning artist, association or collective will be hosted in residence: an opportunity for research and artistic production inspired by these narratives and their influence on local identity.
The works realised will be exhibited during the 54th edition of Pennabilli Antiquariato.
