National Bowling Stadium Mural -- City of Reno, NV

Project Description:

The Reno Arts & Culture Commission is looking for an artist/artist team to design and create large-scale murals on the exterior of the National Bowling Stadium (NBS), located in Downtown Reno. The Reno Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority operates the NBS, which attracts regional and national bowling tournaments, from 50,000 to 60,000 people. The first facility in the United States dedicated solely to bowling competition, the NBS is home to 88 championship lanes, including the 10 lanes added in 2012 at the Kingpin Club by Brunswick. In 2019, a major remodel was completed on the 4th floor of the bowling stadium, where the competitions are held. The space was modernized by providing space for a larger vendor/spectator area and more room for the bowlers at the lane level. New grab-and-go concessions and restroom facilities were also added. The City of Reno is investing in an update to the exterior of the NBS. This public art call is a part of that refresh.

The murals will be painted on the exterior of the NBS. There are three locations for murals: the northwest corner, the southwest corner, and the southeast corner of the building with elements wrapping onto the north and west walls (see image below). The mural does not need to cover the entire west wall but must extend partially across the front of the building on Center Street. Approximate square footage to be painted is around 12,000 square feet.

Themes and concepts are open, however, proposals that tie the University of Nevada Reno into the city will be given priority. This can be done through color, abstraction, or a figurative/objective approach. The goals for the project include: revitalizing the exterior of the NBS and surrounding area, creating a unique character for a specific area of town, increasing public awareness of art, and broadening visitors’ perspectives of public spaces within the City. The artist(s) selected should have demonstrated experience working in public locations subject to vandalism and weather.

The $80,000 commission will cover all services from design through final installation/implementation, including artist fee, fabrication, equipment, insurance, transportation, travel fees, and installation.

Final selection of one artist or team will be made by the PAC, RACC, and stakeholders and approved by the Capital Projects Surcharge Committee based on proposals and qualifications.

Budget:

Project budget is $80,000 for the entire project. This budget is inclusive of all costs associated with the design, planning, installation, and completion of the project. The budget includes all travel costs and insurance. This project is funded by the City of Reno’s Capital Projects Surcharge Fund.

Submission Requirements:

1. Resume or CV: Current professional resume or curriculum vitae (CV), detailing professional artistic accomplishments and references from past public art projects.

2. Images: 5 images of previously completed artwork. Include image list with date, size, location, and description of work.

3. Proposed project: Detailed written description of proposed design for mural including materials and project approach plus visual sketch or rendering of proposed project.

The Artist Selection Process:

Artists/teams submit qualifications, past work examples, and a proposal online through Submittable (see below).

The Public Art Committee, with input from stakeholders, and RACC will select an artist/artist team for the commission to recommend to the Capital Projects Surcharge Committee.

Timeline:

Deadline to apply: November 7, 2022
Review by Public Art Committee and Stakeholders: November 14
Review/approval by RACC: November 21
Capital Projects Surcharge Committee approval: November 22
Painting takes place December to February of 2023
