“Hollow Sounds” Group Photography Exhibition Open Call

We are excited to invite early-career photographers based in and around the New York City area to submit their work to Hollow Sounds, an independently curated survey of contemporary photography. Insistent upon regulating time, labor, and bodies, late capitalist society imparts a haunted outline to images of inaction, always suggesting an obligation beyond and unease within their borders. Although these scenes often evoke silence, the act of capturing an image necessarily weaves a soundscape of human imagination through the quiet. Hollow Sounds argues for the value of visuals as catalysts for generating subjective worlds of sound. By embracing the sonic limitations of photography, this show aims to celebrate the generative potential of sound on artistic and curatorial visions.

Artists are invited to submit work which explores the interactions between sound, memory, subjectivity, and intimacy. All photographers/mixed media artists employing photographic practice are welcome to submit work; we especially encourage artists who have less experience showing their work and queer/BIPOC/women artists to submit. Submitting portfolios or social media accounts is preferred over individual photographs to foster further collaborative opportunities between other artists and the curator, though specific pieces are also considered. No application fee is required.

Hollow Sounds will be presented at the Ziello Gallery on a date in early 2025 (likely late February/early March.) Admission to the show will be free with suggested donations, which will be split equally between all artists.

This show will be curated by Alex Calloway (they/he). Currently pursuing an MA in Material Culture from the Bard Graduate Center, Alex studies the intersections of time, identity, and memory within curatorial and archival industries. They have curated and collaborated with organizations such as the Newcomb Art Museum, MARI, and The Dilettante.
