Call to Artists: Covington Kroger Mural

Description

BLDG in partnership with the Kroger Company, will commission a professional artist to create exterior artwork for the Kroger store A381 at 1525 Madison Ave, Covington, KY 41011.
The artwork will be prominently displayed as the major visual part of the exterior to the store instilling the Kroger Company’s commitment to involving artist in beautifying stores throughout the nation.
The artwork will be expected to celebrate the spirit of the community and the unique identity of the neighborhood and its surroundings.
The artwork/mural will be painted directly to the exterior building surface by the BLDG Brands Art Team. The size of the finished artwork will approximately measure 22’H x 220’W (1:10 scale ratio).

Eligibility
Kroger will be engaging local artists only. This call is open to artists living in the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky region. When submitting your artist application, please indicate your specific or direct connection to Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region.

To apply for the Kroger Portfolio
Interested artists must submit the following via email to Jarrod Becker at Jarrod@bldgbrands.com.
1. Confirmation of intent to participate.
2. Current resume, pdf or word format.
3. Link to website.
4. If no website available, please provide at least three (3) images of previously documented work that demonstrates your ability to design and create large-scale artwork with an annotated informational sheet which includes title, date and brief description of each image. You may also provide any other information that the Artist/candidate believes would be helpful to Kroger assessing each of the candidates and their capabilities.

Semi-Finalist Proposal Award
From the Portfolio, Kroger will select eight (8) artists to respond to an RFP and prepare a concept proposal. Artists will receive $400 for their proposals.

Project Budget
One artist will be awarded a commission of $10,000. This amount includes all artist fees and design costs by 12/1/2025.

Good to know
This will be a ‘work-for-hire’ commission. If you are the artist who receives the commission, Kroger will provide design feedback. Be prepared to receive art direction in the event they make suggestions.
Winning artist will handoff a final rendering of the mural/artwork concept in vector file format.
BLDG Brands will be acting as on-site art mural installer, with guidance from the artist. BLDG Brands will perform the installation of the said mural/artwork. The artist is not required to be onsite for installation of the mural. Be prepared to receive direction for activation & layout direction by BLDG Brands Art Team for a smooth execution of art image to the multiple exterior walls of Covington Kroger building.
When considering a concept for this project, your work should be bold, bright and focus on Covington landmarks and/or landscapes. There can be abstract or graphical elements as well. No figures or people should be represented. Any text would be optional, so “Love the Cov” is not a requirement. Kroger wants the mural fits within the artistic landscape of other Covington murals so bold, graphic, dynamic.
