Description
Photography has the power to knit together people, places, and things, both literally and metaphorically. The present moment is fraught with peril and systems are unravelling. Yet, at the same time, we have witnessed the power of unity, of people coming together to empower and support each other. Photography has the influence to inspire action, to connect, and to intertwine community.
GATHER, a student-curated exhibition at Emerson College, seeks photographic and lens-based works that push the boundaries of the medium as well as forefront labor and physicality. We invite series that consider themes of creation and (dis)connection, fragments and patchwork, and repairs and reparations. Projects that explore other interwoven concepts — completion/incompletion, perfection/imperfection, tension/release, mending/unravelling, breaking/binding, and missed/mis/communication — are also encouraged.
GATHER welcomes analog and historical processes; sewing on, collaging, or weaving images together; references to or documents of handwork and craft; or pushing pictures into three or more dimensions. Regarding new media, video, projection, and installations, we invite artworks that embrace imperfections, expose seams, and bring in mixed media, such as fabric or other materials. Our call also invites collaborative work by one or more people as well as collectives.
GATHER aims to weave these various threads together to make a larger whole and make a difference. We look forward to seeing how artists incorporate and interrogate this particular moment and how we can gather together.
