Description

Chazen Museum of Art Faculty Exhibition 2020

In celebration of the museum’s 50th anniversary, current UW-Madison faculty who focus on art-making--in all its forms--are invited to submit a proposal to participate in an exhibition to be held in spring 2020. Proposals should explore relationships between the artist’s own work and specific art works in the museum’s collection, or the artist’s own work and the museum’s public spaces. Proposals might include a time-based work proposed for a specific museum space, an installation in a permanent collection gallery, two artworks (one from the artist, one from the collection) installed together, an intervention within museum architecture, or an engagement with the windows on East Campus Mall.

Eligibility:
This is a broad call for proposals: current faculty from departments across the campus, who utilize art-making in their teaching and research, are encouraged to apply. Multiple proposals are welcome, but only one proposal per person will be accepted. Group proposals will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. All current UW-Madison teaching faculty, including non-student lecturers and adjuncts, are welcome to submit proposals. Students and non-teaching faculty are not eligible to submit proposals, but may be included as participants in projects or performances.

Any work of art in the museum’s collection or any public space within the museum is eligible to be considered in relation to the artist’s work. Submissions may include suggestions about display and installation, but final display decisions will be made by museum staff. Access to artworks in storage for research during the proposal and preparation stages will be at the discretion of the museum staff. See the museum website for a searchable database of the museum’s collection.
Juror:
Gary Garrido Schneider--an artist, educator, and museum administrator who currently serves as the Executive Director of Grounds For Sculpture--will choose up to 50 projects to feature in the exhibition. Projects will be installed throughout the galleries and public spaces in the museum.

Shipping & Installation:
Accepted artists will be expected to consult with museum staff on mounting and display requirements, and transport their art work to and from the museum. Work must be ready for display upon delivery to the museum. Installations in permanent collection galleries and other public space will be planned and completed in cooperation with museum staff during October, November, and December, 2019. Delivery of works for collection pairings will be accepted January 13-17, 2020, for installation later the same month. Performances will be scheduled in cooperation with museum staff, to be held February 1 - May 10, 2020.
